The Leather and Footwear Research Institute (ICPI) is the division of the National Research and Development Institute for Textiles and Leather (INCDTP) established in Bucharest in 1951. In Romania, ICPI has unique expertise and research and development facilities in leather processing, footwear manufacturing and related fields. In recent years, the dynamic and comprehensive presence of the Institute at national and international level has made possible the development and promotion of applied interdisciplinary research in the fields of leather, footwear, collagen, rubber goods, cultural heritage. In order to fulfill its active role, ICPI collaborates with SMEs, other research and development centers, universities, associations, public organizations, etc. from Romania and abroad and develops the following research and development directions:
● Innovative materials and environmentally friendly technologies for the leather, rubber and footwear sectors;
● Recycling / recovery of waste from the leather and footwear sectors for the generation of value-added by-products;
● Medical footwear used in the conservative treatment of lower limb pathomechanics;
● Procedures and materials for evaluation, conservation and treatment (including leather and parchment) for the assessment and restoration of collagen-based historical and cultural objects;
● Life-long learning and improvement for the development of new skills and competences, studies and strategies for increasing sectoral competitiveness as well as research and development capacity in the field of leather and footwear;
